Individual heating for every room

RAMSES room thermostats and clock thermostats

RAMSES room thermostats and clock thermostats  from Theben regulate heating and air conditioning in rooms individually, energy-efficiently, and time-dependently: the bathroom should be cozy and warm in the morning, while the temperature in the living room can be lowered by a few degrees at night. Room and clock thermostats can be used to control underfloor heating, heat pumps, electric heating, or traditional radiators for gas or oil heating systems. Individual room control with actuators is also possible. Whether you use a surface-mounted or flush-mounted device, or whether you use an analog or digital device, is entirely up to you.

What is the difference between a room thermostat and a clock thermostat?

RAMSES room thermostats and clock thermostats are used to control the room temperature in a building, but they have different functions and areas of application:

Room thermostat

  • A room thermostat continuously measures the current room temperature and controls the heating or cooling devices to bring the temperature to a specific setpoint and maintain it there.
  • There are mechanical or electronic/digital versions.
  • Control is based on the current indoor climate, without taking specific schedules or time slots into account.

Clock thermostat

  • Clock thermostats are programmable thermostats that allow you to set schedules for temperature control. Unlike a room thermostat, which continuously measures and regulates the temperature, a clock thermostat changes the temperature based on pre-programmed schedules.
  • Clock thermostats allow you to preset times at which the temperature in the room is raised or lowered, based on daily habits or usage patterns.

Electronic room thermostats

RAMSES room thermostats are only available in 230 V versions. They monitor and control the room temperature in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. They consist of a sensor that measures the current room temperature and a control unit that regulates the heating or cooling devices based on the measured values.

All conventional room thermostats can be controlled via an electronic RAMSES room thermostat from Theben. Controlling heating systems in an energy-efficient manner: heat pumps, gas boilers, underfloor heating systems or electric heating systems. Individually adjustable heating and temperature profiles ensure a warm home and low energy costs. Individual room control is possible in combination with Theben actuators. The RAMSES 708 S also offers a external temperature sensor for underfloor heating systems (damp rooms or bathroom heating systems). On many devices, an LED indicates the heating status. Digital room thermostats from Theben for Flush-mounted versions fit into the adapter frames of most common switch manufacturers. and blend harmoniously into existing rows of switches and sockets. Here, external temperature reduction is possible by controlling it with a timer switch. For wall-mounted devices, the integrated temperature reduction is  also possible by controlling it with a timer switch. The temperature reduction can be reduced by opening a wire bridge.

FAQ

Where is the best place to put a room thermostat?

The placement of the device in the room is crucial for accurate measurement and control of the room temperature.

Central location: The thermostat should be installed in a central location in the room that is representative of the average temperature in the room. This can often be on an interior wall near the living area.

Avoid heat sources: The device should not be placed near heat sources such as radiators, stoves, sunlight through windows, or electrical appliances. These can lead to incorrect room temperature measurements and cause the thermostat to switch on and off too frequently.

Adequate air circulation: Ensure that air can circulate freely around the thermostat to ensure accurate measurement of the room temperature. Avoid placing it behind curtains, furniture, or other obstacles that could obstruct the airflow.

Keep away from drafts: Do not place the thermostat in areas with drafts or strong air currents, as this can lead to inaccurate measurements. Do not install the device near doors or windows that are opened frequently.

Minimum height: The room thermostat should be installed at a height of approximately 1.5 to 1.8 meters above the floor to ensure a representative measurement of the air temperature in the room.

Not for use in humid or extreme environments: For mechanical devices, avoid placing the thermostat in humid or extreme environments such as bathrooms or directly above kitchen appliances, as this may affect the accuracy of the device. This is not a problem with electronic devices.

How do you adjust a room thermostat?

A room thermostat is usually controlled via a control unit or a control panel attached directly to the device. Here are the basic steps for adjusting a room thermostat:

Setting the temperature: RAMSES room thermostats have a rotary knob that allows you to set the desired room temperature. Turn the knob to set the desired temperature.

Use additional functions: Some mechanical room thermostats offer additional functions such as ON/OFF switches for the heating or auxiliary heating. In addition, devices with external temperature sensors are available for use with underfloor heating systems. With the RAMSES 746 and other Theben devices, external temperature reduction is possible by controlling them with a timer.

Which is better: a room thermostat or a heating thermostat?

The question of whether a room thermostat or a heating thermostat is better depends on individual requirements, the desired level of comfort, and the existing heating or cooling systems.

Room thermostat: A room thermostat measures the room temperature and controls the heating or cooling devices to achieve and maintain the desired room temperature. Room thermostats often provide more precise temperature control and can help optimize energy consumption by regulating heating or cooling based on actual conditions in the room.

Heating thermostat: A heating thermostat is located on a radiator and regulates the heat supply directly at the source by controlling the flow of heating water. Heating thermostats are often simpler and less expensive than room thermostats and can be a good solution for rooms where individual temperature control is required, such as in different rooms of a house. However, they do not typically provide precise temperature control throughout the room and do not take into account actual room conditions like a room thermostat.

In many cases, a combination of room thermostats and heating thermostats may be the best solution, especially in larger homes or buildings with different heating zones. This allows you to control the temperature in each room individually, while improving the overall efficiency of the heating or cooling system.

Which room thermostat should I use for underfloor heating?

In principle, every RAMSES room thermostat can also control underfloor heating systems. It measures the air temperature in the room and controls the heating or cooling devices regardless of the type of heating system. Special devices for underfloor heating, on the other hand, not only measure the air temperature in the room, but also take into account the temperature of the floor via an external temperature sensor. This can be important because underfloor heating systems distribute heat evenly across the floor, and the temperature in the room may rise more slowly than with other heating systems.

Can I replace a mechanical room thermostat with an electronic one?
Yes, you just need to make sure that three wires and a neutral conductor (blue) are available.

What does "thermal recycling" mean?

"Thermal feedback" refers to a function in a mechanical room thermostat. This ensures that the device can regulate the room temperature more accurately. This function recycles some of the heat energy detected by the thermostat to improve the accuracy of the temperature measurement.

Essentially, the thermostat measures the room temperature and switches the heating or cooling system on or off depending on whether the room temperature is above or below the set value. However, thermal recirculation causes some of the heat energy received by the thermostat to be released back into the room. This is done to protect the temperature sensors in the thermostat from overheating and to enable more accurate temperature measurement.

This feature helps the thermostat operate more precisely and detect minor fluctuations in room temperature. This results in a more comfortable indoor climate and saves energy at the same time, as the heating or cooling system operates more efficiently.

All room thermostats from Theben are equipped with thermal feedback.

How can I save heating costs with a room thermostat?

RAMSES room thermostats can help save heating costs by efficiently regulating the room temperature and only turning on the heating when it is actually needed. Here are some tips on how you can save heating costs with a room thermostat:

Lowering the temperature when you're away: When you leave the house or are away from the room for a longer period of time, lower the room temperature by a few degrees. This means that less energy is used to keep the room warm when no one is there.

Avoid excessive heating: Set the room temperature to a comfortable level, but not too high. Every degree Celsius difference has a noticeable effect on your heating costs.

Proper placement: Ensure that your thermostat is positioned correctly and is not affected by heat sources such as radiators, sunlight, or electronic devices. Accurate measurement of room temperature enables more precise control of the heating system.

Perform regular maintenance: Check your heating system regularly to ensure that it is working efficiently. Keep radiators clean and bleed them if necessary to ensure optimal heat output.
